Edition Opens the First Resort on Saudi Arabia's Shura Island
The 240-key Red Sea Edition, with interiors by Rockwell Group inside a Foster + Partners masterplan, is the first hotel to open on the dolphin-shaped island at the centre of the Red Sea development.
The Red Sea Edition has opened as the first resort on Shura Island, the centrepiece of Saudi Arabia's Red Sea destination. The hotel has 240 guestrooms, 53 of them suites, spread across beachfront and golf-facing pavilions built to a Foster + Partners masterplan for the island, with interiors by Rockwell Group.
Rockwell's scheme follows a progression from rock to sand to sea, using coral stone, rammed earth, natural oak and woven textures. Guestrooms work from a "sand grain" concept, with coral stone floors and oak; the larger suites each sit beneath their own clamshell roof. Shell-inspired rooftops and low-rise massing keep the buildings below the treeline, and rather than regional motifs the design leans on local materials. Food and drink is concentrated on the water at Jiwa Terrace, shaded by a timber canopy hung with reeds, and Jiwa Beach Club.
Wellness centres on The Recovery Dome, an indoor-outdoor space for movement and mindfulness programming, alongside The Spa and The Gym. Buildings were prefabricated offsite and assembled on the island, and are designed to act as defences against coastal erosion.
